About Kambo
The Indigenous Understanding of Kambo
In Amazonian traditions, Kambo is used to remove “Panema.”
Panema is described as a heavy energetic state that can manifest as:
• fatigue
• misfortune or “bad luck”
• depression or lack of motivation
• mental fog
• disconnection from purpose
When Panema is cleared, the person is believed to return to a natural state of vitality, clarity and alignment.
Kambo is therefore used traditionally not only for physical health, but also to restore harmony between the individual, the community and nature.
How Kambo Works
Kambo is applied through small superficial points on the skin. These points allow the bioactive compounds in the secretion to enter the lymphatic system.
Within minutes the body begins to respond, activating detoxification processes and stimulating circulation and immune activity.
The experience may include:
• rapid heart rate
• flushing or heat in the body
• swelling around the eyes or lips
• sweating
• nausea and purging
Purging is considered a central part of the cleansing process as the body releases toxins and stagnant energy.
The intense phase of the experience typically lasts 20–40 minutes, after which the body begins to settle and a period of rest and integration follows.
Many people report feeling lighter, clearer and deeply reset afterwards.
The Science of Kambo
The secretion of the Phyllomedusa bicolor frog contains a remarkable range of naturally occurring bioactive peptides.
Peptides are small chains of amino acids that act as signalling molecules within the body. They influence systems including the immune system, endocrine system, cardiovascular system and digestive system.
Researchers have identified a number of peptides in Kambo including:
Dermorphin – interacts with opioid receptors involved in the body’s natural pain regulation.
Deltorphin – another peptide acting on opioid receptors that influences natural endorphin pathways.
Phyllomedusin – stimulates smooth muscle activity in the digestive system and contributes to the purging response.
Phyllokinin – a vasodilator that influences blood circulation and blood pressure.
Phyllocaerulein – stimulates digestive secretions and influences the adrenal and pituitary glands.
Sauvagine – affects circulation and cardiovascular activity.
Adenoregulin – interacts with receptors in the nervous system.
Dermaseptin – a peptide studied for its antimicrobial activity.
These peptides work together to create the strong physiological response experienced during Kambo, activating detoxification pathways and stimulating the body’s natural healing processes.
Scientific research into these compounds continues as scientists explore their potential applications in medicine.
Ethical Harvesting
The Kambo used at Wolf Spirit is ethically sourced from indigenous communities in the Amazon.
The frogs are carefully located in the rainforest and the secretion is gently collected without harming the animal. After the process the frogs are released back into their natural habitat.
These communities have a deep relationship with the frog and the medicine it carries, treating both with respect and reverence.
Supporting ethically sourced Kambo helps sustain indigenous knowledge and traditions.
The Ceremony Experience
Kambo ceremonies at Wolf Spirit are held in small, carefully guided circles so each participant receives close attention and support.
The experience is intense but relatively short, and the process is held with calm guidance, breath and grounding.
Preparation guidance is provided before the ceremony, and time is allowed afterwards for rest, nourishment and integration.
Every person’s experience is unique and the medicine meets each individual where they are.
Safety & Contraindications
Kambo is a powerful cleansing medicine and is not suitable for everyone.
For safety reasons it should not be used by people with certain medical conditions including:
• serious heart conditions
• very low blood pressure
• aneurysm
• organ transplant
• certain psychiatric conditions
• pregnancy or recent childbirth
All participants must complete a health consultation and waiver form before attending a ceremony.
Safety and responsible practice are always the highest priority.
Working With Mahi
Mahi holds Kambo ceremonies with deep respect for the medicine and the traditions it comes from.
Her work combines traditional practices with trauma-informed awareness, creating a safe space where the body can release what it is ready to let go of.
Each ceremony is guided with care, integrity and attention to the unique needs of every participant.
What Does Kambo Feel Like?
Every Kambo experience is unique, but there are some common sensations that most people experience.
Within a few minutes of the medicine being applied, you may feel a sudden warmth spreading through the body, a rapid heartbeat, and flushing of the skin. The face and lips may swell slightly, and many people experience sweating or nausea.
Purging is a central part of the Kambo process. This can include vomiting, releasing fluids or going to the toilet. While this may sound intense, the purge is often experienced as a powerful physical and energetic release.
The active phase usually lasts 20–40 minutes. During this time you will be closely supported and guided through the process.
Once the purge is complete, the body begins to settle and many people experience a deep sense of calm, clarity and relief. It is common to feel lighter, more present, and deeply reset afterwards.
Every journey is different, and the medicine tends to meet each person exactly where they are.
Preparing for Your Kambo Ceremony
Preparation is simple but important to ensure your body can work safely and effectively with the medicine.
Before your session please follow these guidelines:
• Avoid alcohol for 48 hours before the ceremony
• Avoid recreational drugs for 48 hours before and after
• Eat normally the day before your ceremony
• Do not eat for 7 hours before the session
• Drink only small amounts of water on the day (maximum around 500ml)
• Avoid coffee or caffeine on the day of the ceremony
Come well rested, open minded and ready to surrender to the process.
Kambo is not something that needs to be forced. Simply arriving with a clear intention and a willingness to trust the experience is enough.
Full preparation guidance will be provided once your session is booked.
Aftercare & Integration
After your ceremony there will be time to rest and allow your body to integrate the experience.
Many people feel a deep sense of calm, clarity and renewed energy in the hours and days that follow.
To support integration it is recommended to:
• eat light, nourishing foods
• stay hydrated
• avoid alcohol for at least 24–48 hours
• rest and listen to your body
• allow space for emotional or energetic shifts
Some people notice changes unfolding over the following days or weeks as the body continues to rebalance itself.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Kambo psychedelic?
No. Kambo is not psychedelic and does not produce visions or altered states of consciousness. It is a physical cleansing process that works through the body.
How long does the ceremony last?
The active part of the Kambo process usually lasts around 20–40 minutes, but the full ceremony including preparation and integration generally lasts 2–3 hours.
How many sessions do people usually do?
Some people receive Kambo once for a deep cleanse, while others work with the medicine over several sessions. Traditionally it is sometimes taken three times within one moon cycle, but this varies depending on the individual.
Is Kambo safe?
When administered responsibly with proper screening and preparation, Kambo is a safe practice. However it is not suitable for everyone, which is why a full consultation form must be completed before attending.
Is the frog harmed?
No. The secretion is collected in a way that does not harm the frog, and the animal is released back into the forest afterwards.
